My first day on the job was indeed an interesting one.
It started at 10am and end at 5pm.
Went down this morning totally blur,
but came back today with my brain all filled up with new found knowledge.
Being a cashier is NOT at all easy,
seriously.
One will not know understand the difficulty until one is in the shoes of it.
To start,
the number of keys on the cash register is already a challenge.
To memorise all the function of the keys is already quite a task.
Next, one has to remember the steps of what to key at each stage of the payment.
If that was still chicken feet, next comes the money.
As kids, we do not understand the sensitivity of $$$ as money is simply not a major factor in our life.
When we need it to buy sth, what do we do?
Yes, stretch our hands out and people called our parents will give it to us with a smile.
However, in the working world.
Money is really sacred.
When dealing with money, one has to be careful, be careful and BE CAREFUL.
At every check point in the cashier's job, one has to double check, double check and double check.
One miscalculation, and there goes one's head.
Not even considering the "getting into trouble with the law" part.
After this, the next task would be packing.
If u think putting all ur groceries into the shopping bags is an easy task.
Well, think again.
Its not as simple as it seems to be.
One has to have a certain amount of experience and skill, to ensure u the customer has all ur stuff sorted out neatly in the bags.
For example, wet and dry items, poisonous items... all have to be separated.
Then, for items of the same category, one must also know how to organise them neatly in a bag.
Or else, the bag u would be getting would simply be in a total mess.
Lastly, breakable items and huge items.
Do u know how scary is it to pack goods, glass items and listen to the "klang klang klang" sound?
Then, do u know how hard is it to lean over the counter and carry ur super heavy carton of drink and then put it into a huge bag then lean over again to return it to u?
But, these are all still pretty easy when there is only 1 or 2 customers in the queue.
Wait till evenings or weekends.
Boom, the queue stretches all the way back.
Then, one will start to panic.
One can no long take one's own sweet time to think.
Everything has got to be fast.
And, unfortunately like they say haste makes waste.
Thus, as the cashier tries to "chiong".
He too has to be extremely careful.
Accidents are not pardonable in the working world.
An example of common errors are:
Short or over changing the customer, double charging or double scanning an item, or allowing the customer to leave without taking his/her bag.
Either one of this, one will be so "big head-ed".
The procedures to correct an error is not something funny.
N especially when one miscounts the money, one's salary will also be "miscounted".
In short, have to pay.
Last but not least,
The worst thing to happen is to meet an unruly customer.
Man, there goes ur day.
And, on my 1st day of work i was so "LUCKY" to meet one.
Fortunately, i was attached to a mentor, so she "tank-ed" the customer.
The situation was so ugly, ugly that i shut myself in silence, for i fear that one wrong word from my mouth will add oil to the fire.
And, hell la.
90% of the customers don't even smile.
Come on la!
The one serving you over the counter is also a human right?
Cashiers also never offend u.
For the whole day, i have been seeing black face after black face.
I started with a fresh brimming smiley face, but after looking at all those "u owe me $" faces, my face turned "Sian-ed" too.
Please remember to smile when u are making payment the next time ok, it will really brighten up someone's day.
Phew, after saying so much i guess what i said meant nothing at all.
I think all that i just said are so plain boring.
Why?
Cos one really has to get "hands-on" to appreciate it.
Anyway, gosh the number of "sign in" procedures alone is already OMG!
So many red tapes!
I think for a beginner like me i need something like 30mins to sign in and 15 so sign out la.
Count the money, double count the money, then count the receipt, then key into the computer to tally and sign here sign there.
Then give to manager check, blah blah blah blah.
Whoa, so many things to follow.
Zzzz.
Summing up,
Yes my job is a cashier.
But if u think that i actually did "cashier" today.
Wrong!
Its my first day at work, and i was send for an attachment to some mentor.
There, most of the time all i did was packing.
However, i did try scanning and payment for like 30mins.
Then, cause i was too slow and the queue was getting a little too long, my "shi fu" took back over.
Wee.
But, it was really a fun experience and
I had an GREAT day today!
Work starts at 5pm tmr,
supposed to start at 10am, but all because some people wanna go out.
Make me lose out 2 hours of pay, whao!
Are u guys paying me my $$ loss?
Cos its 10am-5pm and 5pm-10pm shift, 7hrs for the former and 5hrs for the latter.
Wed till Fri i will be going on course, cashier training course, then after that i will became a real CASHIER!
Yay.
One last thing, from tmr or once i get my locker, i will not be able to bring my hp or wallet with me to the counter.
Red tapes.
So, don't get angry if i don't pick up the phone or reply sms, cos i am WORKING!
$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$
$$$$$
Working and earning $$ is really not easy.
One day at work and i am already so tired.
People reading this should be so fortunate that i still took time to blog.
Hahaha.
Scott signs off.
